A friend of mine ran Debian on a SparcStation 5. It worked fine, except for a processor bug that there was no workaround in the kernel for.
Suns are damn fine server machines, but one caveat: If you plan to run linux instead of solaris, do your homework first, and find out how linux will run on the particular machine before you spend all your money on a machine with a CPU bug.
